Perch Accessory for Big Top® Bird Feeder

Attaching perch space to your Big Top Bird Feeder will attract a wider variety of feeder birds. Perches act as a platform and offer the sure footing that ground feeding birds, like Cardinals, prefer. These birds will be more likely to linger at a feeder for longer when they have a secure place to perch, affording great bird watching opportunities.

How to have a successful birding experience:

Placement: Birds feel vulnerable out in the open, so try to place your feeder near a bush or tree. If you have other feeders, placing this one near an older one will help the birds get used to it. These creatures of habit could take weeks to feel comfortable at the new feeder.

Mounting: Hang your feeder with a sturdy hook or chain.

When to Feed: Feeding year round is good for the birds and gives you the most enjoyment.

Water: Birds need a regular supply of water for both drinking and bathing.

Cleaning: Please, for the sake of the birds, keep your feeders clean! Dirty feeders can harm the birds. Use our Bird Feeder Brush (BFB) for thorough and simple cleaning. Dry thoroughly before filling with seed.

Metal perches: Birds’ feet won’t stick to metal perches in freezing weather since they have no sweat glands in them.

Discourage squirrels: Place your feeder 4 feet from the ground and 8 feet from anything a squirrel can jump from.

Nice large cap feeder, I hung it from a high oak tree branch ( from a tall ladder ) using a solid 12 gage copper wire aprox 10′ long and still 6′ from the ground and from a point on the branch that was well away from the trunk so tree rats could not jump to it. After 6 mos they are completely baffled.

great landing base for all birds. I notice most will land here and then chose a perch. I love the BTP because I have the feeder that holds 4 lbs of seed and I don’t have to worry about it tipping over when I set it on the ground. thanks DY!

I added this and the squirrels would slide down the top and grab onto the BTG (BT PERCH) and get into the seed bowl

      Hi Anthony,
Thank you for contacting Droll Yankees. I am sorry that you’re having no success at all deterring squirrels from your feeders. Squirrels are so clever and relentless and it seems sometimes that they’re smarter than most other animals. One of the biggest challenges to feeding wild birds—our own challenge too—is deterring squirrels. We work on a daily basis to create quality products and cultivate good advice that will help us all win this fight.

I can completely sympathize with your squirrel frustration. My goal is to help restore your faith in our products by offering you some squirrel-proof advice. The key to successfully keeping a feeder squirrel-proof is its placement. Squirrels are agile and are able to jump up to 8ft horizontally and 4ft vertically. For this reason, we recommend that feeders be placed 8ft away from any structures that they can climb on, so that they do not reach across to access the feeding holes. It can be helpful to trim back and prune any nearby bushes or branches within 12ft of a feeder. We also recommend that feeders be placed higher than 4ft off the ground, preventing the squirrels from jumping and grabbing onto the bottom. If you are using a hook or pole, we recommend that the hook have at least a 16in distance from the pole. Placing a baffle on the pole will also help to ensure squirrel-proofing success.

If you make sure to properly place any of our squirrel-proof feeders, I am confident that you will start having success in deterring the squirrels. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please call our Customer Service Department at 1-800-352-9164 and any one of our Customer Service Reps will be happy to assist you. Our hours are 7 am – 4:30 pm Mon-Fri (EST). We hope this helps you get back to feeding birds and thwarting squirrels!
