I have one this bird feeders and it worked for about 6 months, we live in Florida, our squirrels are the gray ones and they are fairly small, anyway after about 6 months of trying, one of them was able to enter the cage and now it goes in and out with any problem. I couldn’t believe it when I saw it inside the cage, I wish that I could add the photos I took !!!

Thank you for contacting Droll Yankees. I am sorry that you’re having no success at all deterring squirrels from your feeders. Squirrels are so clever and relentless and it seems sometimes that they’re smarter than most other animals. One of the biggest challenges to feeding wild birds—our own challenge too—is deterring squirrels. We work on a daily basis to create quality products and cultivate good advice that will help us all win this fight. I can completely sympathize with your squirrel frustration. My goal is to help restore your faith in our products by offering you some squirrel-proof advice.

Can you please confirm if you are having issues with grey squirrels or chipmunks? Due to the small size of chipmunks, this feeder is not chipmunk-proof, but this feeder does deter grey squirrels.

The key to successfully keeping a feeder squirrel-proof is its placement. Squirrels are agile and are able to jump up to 8ft horizontally and 4ft vertically. For this reason, we recommend that feeders be placed 8ft away from any structures that they can climb on, so that they do not reach across to access the feeding holes. It can be helpful to trim back and prune any nearby bushes or branches within 12ft of a feeder. We also recommend that feeders be placed higher than 4ft off the ground, preventing the squirrels from jumping and grabbing onto the bottom. If you are using a hook or pole, we recommend that the hook have at least a 16in distance from the pole. Placing a baffle on the pole will also help to ensure squirrel-proofing success.

If you make sure to properly place any of our squirrel-proof feeders, I am confident that you will start having success in deterring the squirrels. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please call our Customer Service Department at 1-800-352-9164 and any one of our Customer Service Reps will be happy to assist you. Our hours are 7 am – 4:30 pm Mon-Fri (EST). We hope this helps you get back to feeding birds and thwarting squirrels!

I believe this is the best caged bird feeder on the market. It not only keeps larger birds like pigeons from accessing the bird seed, but also medium sized birds like starlings, curve-billed thrashers, and inca doves. The cage is wide enough to prevent medium sized birds from squeezing their heads through the cage and stretching to reach seed. I also like that it doesn’t have a solid bottom. I don’t have to worry about seed particles, shells, and droppings accumulating on the bottom. The spacing of the holes in the cage bottom, and the distance of the bottom part of the cage from the bottom feeding ports, prevents large birds from accessing seeds from underneath. I like that the clear dome cover keeps seeds dry and doesn’t block my view of the birds. I have used other caged feeders, but none of them had all of these features (you get what you pay for). After using this feeder for years, I did replace the tube feeder section with the A-6RP Classic Sunflower Bird Feeder with Ring Pull Advantage just for ease of cleaning. This is a sturdy feeder that will last for years. It does everything the company claims, and is worth every penny. After buying this feeder, I am a Droll Yankees convert. I have since bought other feeders from this company, and am never disappointed with the quality.

Excellent build quality and does what it is supposed to do – let the smaller birds feed unmolested. I have way too many doves and blackbirds that will clean out any open feeder. This solves that problem and the larger birds will eat the spilled seeds off the ground. I bought 2 of these to have different types of feed.
