I gave my wife this feeder 4 months ago, and in the time that we’ve had it, no bird of any kind, finch or otherwise, has ever eaten from it. We’ve tried both the DY Thistle and the mixed finch food, and no dice. The birds all queue up for the small, cheap feeder next to it, patiently waiting their turn, but avoiding this one like the plague. We’ve even put the same feed in the other feeder, and the birds happily eat from it. The birds loath this feeder and avoid it at all costs – I even feel like I can see a look of disdain and disgust as they look at it from the 9 dollar plastic feeder three feet away. It’s really weird.

Thank you for contacting Droll Yankees. We are very sorry that you are not seeing birds on your new feeder. Birds are creatures of habit, and it can take them days or even weeks to use a new feeder. There is something new in the yard that they are not used to, and they need to warm up to it first. We would suggest temporarily removing other feeders in the area so that the birds must use the new one.

Temporarily placing the feeder near a shrub or tree where birds will feel safe can also encourage them to explore the new feeder. Oddly enough, filling the feeder half-full seems to help attract the birds to the new feeder. We hope that the birds begin to use the feeder soon, and please keep us updated! If you have any additional questions or concerns, please call our Customer Service Department at 1-800-352-9164 and any one of our Customer Service Reps will be happy to assist you. Our hours are 7 am – 4:30 pm Mon-Fri (EST).

I am finally buying a new 36″ feeder because after about 14 or 15 years I cannot get the portholes clean any more; the birds have pecked the holes so enthusiastically that they are enlarged a bit and stained as well. I suppose that after more than a decade of heavy use by a “hordes” of goldfinches and other thistle-seed lovers I cannot begrudge them a new feeder. The birds bring me so much enjoyment when I see their drab winter colors change to bright spring and summer hues that I cannot begrudge them a new feeder. 🙂

I bought this feeder about 13 years ago. It has been a staple for my bird feeding fun. It is easy to take apart to clean. The only problem I have found with cleaning is that if you like a ‘totally’ clean tube, it is nearly impossible to reach the center of the tube when cleaning due to the length. With that said, the bottom (where water, dirt, and mold tend to build up) come apart, cleans, and reassembles easily. The only problem I have had in my 13 years of continued use is the loss of a few perches. The feeder is fully functional without them, there are just less perches for the birds to sit on. As a thistle seed feeder, this one is top notch in its performance and durability. I have tried other thistle feeders that only hold up for a year or two (max), making this feeder worth its cost. I have over 100 birds at my feeders at any given time during the day. I have tried going on the cheap with a net sock feeder or two, but they also do not hold up. I am planning a purchase this week for a supplemental thistle seed feeding while the weather is so cold and blustery to replace yet another net sock feeder. These two feeders are almost constantly full of yellow finch and house finch, with an abundance of chickidee and junco flocking underneath at all times eating too! Of course, I also take pleasure in providing 6 sunflower seed feeders (filled with various varieties of seed) and 3 suet feeders for everyone to have a little variety!

I’ve had this feeder for over 10 years now and the finches come to it daily. The only problem I ever had was a crack in the tube which resulted in my wife giving me a different brand of spiral feeder as a replacement two years ago and the finches didn’t want to go to it! I put this one back up and they’ve been going to it again ever since. I just found this website today and am purchasing a second one of these so there’ll be no more waiting!

If you love your finches, they will flock to your yard with this feeder. Large enough so you don’t need to fill it daily, the birds will learn that this is a consistent, dependable food source, and will return day after day,..year after year. It is common to have every position filled, with birds waiting in the trees, for their turn on a perch.
