Droll Yankees New Generation® 15″ Sunflower Seed Feeder is a durable basic bird feeder.

The sturdy metal top, base, and ports are powder coated in forest green that resists chipping or fading.  The feeder has four metal ports that deter squirrels from chewing.  Long lasting UV stabilized polycarbonate tube keeps seed levels visible and won’t yellow with age. The threaded base allows for the attachment of a seed tray or pole-mounting. The feeder can also be hung by its sturdy stainless steel bail wire.  Backed by Droll Yankees Lifetime Warranty against squirrel damage and proudly made in the USA.

Birds that use this feeder: Cardinals, Chickadees, Finches, Flickers, Goldfinches, Grackles, Grosbeaks, Jays, Juncos, Kinglets, Nuthatches, Redpolls, Siskins, Sparrows, Starlings, Titmice, Towhees, Woodpeckers and Wrens

Feeding Sunflower Seeds: A favorite of almost every backyard feeder bird. They have easy to crack, thin shells and can be offered in a wide variety of feeder types, like platform, tube, and hopper feeders. These seeds also have a high fat content that is perfect for giving birds energy all year long, especially in winter.

Please! For the sake of the birds, keep your feeder clean! Dirty feeders spread disease. Soak all parts in a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water. Use a Droll Yankees Bird Feeder Brush to brush away grime inside the tube.

A great bird feeder, very easy to fill and many different kinds of birds use it.

It is of excellent quality. I highly recommend it. It is a little difficult to take fully apart for cleaning as you have to use a screwdriver to remove the base and the feeding ports. If that doesn’t bother you than this is the feeder for you. Otherwise spend a little more and look to one of the Droll Yankees Onyx or Ring Pull feeders for easier cleaning. They aren’t necessarily of better quality than this feeder, but they are easier to clean. This is a great, high quality feeder.

great materials poor design. Have to use screwdriver to clean.

      Hi Sandra,
Thank you for contacting Droll Yankees. We are sorry to hear that the feeder construction is inconvenient for cleaning. While we recommend disassembling your feeder for feeding, this isn’t required. We recommend soaking your feeder in a mild soap & water solution and rinsing thoroughly.
      I hope this information helps!

Thank you for the other reviewers who suggested unscrewing the bird feeder for cleaning. This saved me from purchasing another bird feeder to replace it. Soaking the tube feeder in water and even using Droll Yankees cleaning brush does very little to remove the seeds that caught between the plastic tube and the black part of the base. After only my second cleaning, the build up of seeds was becoming unbearable. If you unscrew the last port hole, it releases the base. But beware! The piece that connects to the screw is very tiny. Be careful you don’t loose it. I only purchased this brand of feeder to use with the Clever Clean seed tray (which I had to retrofit in order for it to work) and the Seattle rain guard. I would have given five stars if this feeder had a base that was easy to remove like their Onyx brand.

      Hi Lana,
Thank you for contacting Droll Yankees. We are sorry to hear that you are having difficulties cleaning your New Generation feeder. Please find the instruction manual here.

Keeping your feeders clean is a very important part of bird feeding. Bacteria and disease are spread through bird droppings on feeders, as well as from seed and hulls below the feeder. Damp feed and debris can cultivate a fungus.

We recommend disinfecting your feeders once a month in winter and more often in hot and humid weather.

Do not use harsh chemicals, as they can be harmful to the birds and the environment. Do not put your feeder in the dishwasher, as the high temperatures can permanently damage the feeder parts.

First, let the birds empty the feeder as far as they can. Shake out any remaining seeds and chaff. Wash all polycarbonate (plastic) parts in a 50/50 solution of hot water and white vinegar, rinse thoroughly. Remove all the hardware and clean with a mild soap & water solution, rinse thoroughly. Refill when completely dry.

Throw out any wet or moldy food and disinfect any containers or scoops used to handle it. If you notice that the seed in the feeder is not being eaten, check to see if it has become moldy or wet from rain.

Make sure to rake, shovel, or shop vac seed debris from beneath feeders on a regular basis to prevent the growth of mold and bacteria and to deter rodents.

Overcrowding at feeders is a key factor in spreading disease. Provide additional feeders to counteract this effect.

Bird Seed Storage—Seed should be stored in a cool, dry place using a sealed container that rodents cannot enter. Mice can spread some bird diseases without being affected themselves.

I have used this bird feeder for many years…
Usually clean about 3-4 times a year. Over those years, the tubes took alot of abuse.
The hardware well it’s indestructible…it was great to be able to order new tubes and put
new life into these feeders. At first glance the new tubes are much thicker than the old ones
so I hope to get many more years of use…
